The Friends of CMSP’s meeting on 11/14, 2009 invited Tara Webb-Duey, from Temple’s Institutional Advancement, to address the group on issues of fundraising. Minutes from the meeting will be distributed via email. If you do not receive an email from me please make sure that I have your correct email address.

Dear CMSP family and friends,

Greetings from the Community Music Scholars Program of Music Prep. When I began directing CMSP ten years ago, 50 students were taking private lessons. Now, 160 Philadelphia school children are filling Presser Hall on Saturday mornings, and we have added music theory classes, a jazz orchestra, string ensemble and dance class. I am personally gratified to witness the extraordinary benefits of this program on our young students as they mature into well-rounded adults, engaged with lifelong learning and personal growth.

As you may know, our umbrella organization is Temple University, a non-profit institution that finds itself in the same position as all non-profits in the city and across the nation: with decreasing state support and a shrinking endowment. Therefore, we are reaching out to our friends and alumni and asking for contributions to support this important program in our community. I hope you will consider making a gift.

It is our mission to provide the best education at the most affordable price, and we are committed to doing so. Please help us to do that, by sending a check of any amount in the enclosed envelope payable to: Temple University, CMSP/Music Prep.

Local High School Student Raises Money for CMSP String Program

Daniel Koo, a senior at Radnor High School plans on attending college to study violin. Last year, he was selected as one of 200 students to receive a scholarship to Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in Erie, Pennsylvania. While there, one of his projects was to develop an idea that would raise money for local music students. Last December, Daniel’s efforts paid off. Through a benefit concert for the Community Music Scholars Program String Project at Temple University’s Music Preparatory Program, Daniel, along with other classmates, raised $1400 in support of private string instruction at a nominal cost for Philadelphia area students.

“My private violin teacher, Ms. Helen Kwalwasser, (Boyer College faculty member) told me about the String Project at Music Prep and how it would reach string students that may not be able to afford individual lessons,” Daniel said. “We all know how important music education is.” Daniel’s (violin) colleagues from the Governor’s School who performed with him on December 27, 2008, included: Martha Mingle (piano) from Delaware County Christian School, Robert May (tenor) from Annville Cleona High School and Levi Smucker (cello) from Ephrata High School. Daniel hopes that their efforts will “inspire more kids to pick up an instrument and find their passions within art.”
